There's no story on the Riats as far as I know, so maybe that's up to me. As far as the Dutch connection goes: Writer Jan Cremer mentioned the Velvets in '66 when reporting from NYC in Hitweek magazine.Jeroen Vedderhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12449317481543476795noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6910067.post-1119833175305532542005-06-26T20:46:00.000-04:002005-06-26T20:46:00.000-04:00that should read "now for the rebuttal"!that should read "<EM>now</EM> for the rebuttal"!Christopher Stiglianohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17107248034597839482noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6910067.post-1119830999511352872005-06-26T20:09:00.000-04:002005-06-26T20:09:00.000-04:00Jeroen-Thanks for the note, not for the rebuttal.....Jeroen-Thanks for the note, not for the <EM>rebuttal</EM>...sure, the Sect covered a Reed /Cale composition that the All Night Workers recorded, but I dunno if that makes them "Velvets influenced"...perhaps they admitted to an influence in some article??? Otherwise it would be like saying that the Yardbirds were influenced by the Velvets because they covered "Waiting For The Man," and maybe they were, but if so it was slight. Ditto the Riats, who I think did that single just for the novelty of it and not because of any great love of the band, though perhaps more information may shed some light. And as for the Swinging Banana or whatever those US servicemen in Vietnam were called, I would also think it a case of someone coming across the album and doing a track from it without actually grasping the Velvets' more mystical/psychic side.Christopher Stiglianohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17107248034597839482noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6910067.post-1119830523494684902005-06-26T20:02:00.000-04:002005-06-26T20:02:00.000-04:00Chris, hows about the Downliner's Sect?. And don't forget Holland's Riats and that US/Viet band on a recent Norton comp who both did VU tunes when Lou & Co were still around...Jeroen Vedderhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12449317481543476795noreply@blogger.com
